Canal Votes Counted October 23: With most votes in, it appears that the Panamanian people have backed an ambitious project to expand its famous canal. The US$3 to $5bn plan will double the canals' capacity. The Panama canal was opened in 1914, linking the Pacific and Atlantic but contemporary container ships are simply too large for the canal and its locks, despite a series of upgrades. Roughly forty ships a day (14,000 a year) pass through the canal, which accounts for 5% of all shipping. Queues of vessels, causing costly delays, are all too common and the Panama Canal Authority warns that if the canal is not enlarged, business will be lost to other shipping routes, specifically to the Suez Canal and now possibly Nicaragua, which has begun planning its own transocean canal.

パナマとスエズが競合しているとは思えないですけどね....
アメリカ東海岸から西海岸のルートとしては、パナマックスであればパナマを通るでしょうし、
それ以上であれば、南米を回るだろうし。
競合するのは欧州からアメリカ西海岸なんていうケースですかね？

いずれにせよ、パナマ運河クルーズも新時代を迎えることになるでしょう。
カリブ海の大型船が運河クルーズができるようになるわけで。
どの程度まで拡がるのかっていうのも注目ですね。
